AVERT (A simulation for evaluating the risk of terrorist attack.)

I was hired to create a graphical user interface (GUI) for a local company, ARES, working on a contract for the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA). The program uses a statistical and stepwise simulation to evaluate the risk of terrorist attacks at a site. It can also help decide how to make a site less vulnerable to attack.

My original role was limited to developing the GUI. I completed the major elements well ahead of the projected schedule and with enhancements the client did not expect in the allotted time. The most distinctive of these additions is a 3D display of a site map that allows real-time rotation of maps, with optional transparency to allow viewing inside buildings and other layered sites.

As a senior scientist working on the project was pulled onto another project, I wrote some of the detailed mathematical simulation code that drives the program, including the stepwise simulation of intruder and guard motion and the combat model used to evaluate the outcome of encounters between guards and intruders.
